plugin install on Mac or Linux
12/19/08 10:40 AM
Hello!!

I am trying to install the builder plugin 6.1 on either a Mac os X or Linux with eclipse eclipse-jee-europa-winter-macosx-carbon.tar.gz & eclipse-jee-europa-winter-linux-gtk-x86_64.tar.gz. As documented on the builder site i am getting an error on the step

# Once the "Updates" window opens, you should see the "Skyway Update Site" in the list.
# Click the box to the left of the entry. This will select the Skyway Visual Perspectives plug-in.
# If you see a dependency error message in the window, do the following:

* Click the + to the left of the list entry for "The Eclipse Project Updates" This is a very important step. Otherwise the next step won't function correctly. This is a known Eclipse issue.
* Now click the "Select Required" button
* All dependency errors should be rectified and you can continue with the installation

However I do not see a '+' icon or sign anywhere in the dialog box. I have tried to click the tiny diamond icon to the left then click the "select required" button but the error does not go away. So i cant proceed. I have included a screen shot of what i am presented with

The image i have included is the same as my mac pro and my linux box.

Andrew,
The instructions were written based on the Windows GUI, which uses + and - symbols to depict expanded or collapsed tree widgets. OS X uses a "twistie" (triangle-shaped) icon to expand and collapse trees, but the functionality is the same.
Expanding the "Eclipse project updates" item is what is required, before using the Select Required button, so it sounds like you have done the correct thing. But I don't see your screenshot; can you attach it so we can see what specific thing it is reporting?

Thanks,
Eric

Andrew,

Do you even see the Maven Integration Update Site in your list of available updates?

For version 6.1 this is a requirement.

If Maven is there, then expand that and collapse it as well. Then do the "Select Required" again.

What update URL did you use?

This is the correct one: http://downloads.skywayperspectives.org/builder/ce/6.1/milestones/updates

Hello!!

This appears to be a bit fishy, i am trying to install the plugin on another machine (Mac OS X)this time it does not work i am getting the same error. There is a difference however, the maven option is above the Europa Discovery site? I have tried clicking the triangles and such, but no success?

Andrew,

Did you click the Select Required button after expanding Maven and Europa?

Andrew,
The screenshot above does not show the Europa site expanded, and the error message is reporting org.eclipse.jet as missing which is one of the dependencies that would come from the Europa site. Are you absolutely certain that you expanded both sites before using the Select Required button? That's the only thing I can think of based on the screenshot.

Aside: maybe we should record a video demonstration of the plugin installation process; that would probably be easier for new users to follow than the text instructions.

Hello!!

I just wanted to folllow-up that Skyway Builder is not officially supported Linux. However, we have seen it run there (an earlier version, 6.0 I think) and in theory there should be nothing preventing it from working. If you do try it on Linux, please let us know about the experience.
